STORY In an attempted coupe of the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser and his minions kidnapped Princess Peach and are hiding her away. It is your job as Mario to once again rescue the Princess and save the Mushroom Kingdom from total disaster. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. HOW TO PLAY Although the default controls for Super Mario Epic are very simple and easy to use, they may be altered to fit the desires of the user (to change the controls, go to File | Players...). Super Mario Epic also supports the use of a joystick. Default controls: Shift - Jump Ctrl - Fire Right/Left - Move Down - Duck Up - Climb At the top of the screen is your lives (to the right of Mario's name), your score (under Mario's name), your item box, amount of Dragon Coins collected, and your energy bar. If you come in contact with an enemy, energy will be subtracted from your bar. When your bar reaches zero, you lose a life and must start the level over. If you get all five Dragon Coins for that stage, you can an extra life. The item box indicates whether or not you have fire power (see "Items"). If you have fire power, you may press Ctrl to shoot a fireball. Enemies are killed ONLY by fireballs (excluding Bowser). Do not attempt to jump on enemies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. ENEMIES Super Mario Epic features a plathora of enemies from the "Mario universe." Here is a brief list with descripions: KOOPA TROOPA - Bowser's main line of defense against Mario. These turtle-like creatures walk back and forth in a set pattern. KOOPA PARATROOPA - Koopa Troopas with flying capabilities. They typically fly in an up-and-down fashion. SHYGUY - These little masked, robed creatures are often more dangerous than they look. FLYGUY - Shyguys with helicopter proppellers on their heads. Fly in various patterns. FATGUY - Obese shyguys. PIRANHA PLANT - Man-eating plants that jump high into the air from pipes or pits. BUZZY BEETLE - Fire-proof creatures that often travel in packs. NINJI - Mysterious little creatures that simply jump up and down. BONZAI BILL - Gigantic bullets (more like bullet-shaped cannons, really) that fire at Mario when he reaches specific areas. Mario's only defense against these are to jump or duck. THE ANGRY SUN - Swoops down and attacks towards the end of the Kalimari Desert. COBRAT - Snakes that travel back and forth, often in twos or threes. PANSER - Fire-breathing flowers. POKEY - A living cactus that can be killed with fire. FLURRY - Small creatures that dwell in the Ice Cave. PODOBOO - Lava bubbles. THWOMP - Fall from the ceiling of Bowser's Castle at set intervals. BOB-OMB - Bowser throws these from his Clown-Copter. Will explode if they hit Mario, but if used right can actually be used to your advantage... BOWSER - The final boss. Defeating him ensures the peace and safety of the Mushroom Kingdom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. ITEMS COIN - Will add 10 pts. to your score. DRAGON COIN - Will add 1000 pts. to your score. Getting all five of these in a level gains you a 1-up. MUSHROOM - Red mushroom that adds energy to Mario's energy bar. 1-UP MUSHROOM - Green mushroom that gives you an extra life. FIRE FLOWER - Orange flower that gives Mario firepower. CRYSTAL BALL - Get this at the end of each level to advance to the next. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. TIPS - If you hear a cannon go off, take cover -- a Banzai Bill has just been fired! - In Bowser's Castle, the moving platform that takes you across the pit of lava does not actually *take* you with it; you must walk to keep up with it (you'll know what I mean when you get there). - Remember what path specific enemies walk on. - Use the Dragon Coins counter to view your progress on Dragon Coins in that stage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6.
